Brush Pile Burning Planned

BISMARCK, ND, March 21, 2024
Anticipated snowfall brings the opportunity to clear the brush piles on multiple locations around the Dakota Prairie Grasslands and neighboring private grounds.

The first planned burns result from work on the Ponderosa Pines Thinning Project West of Amidon (T106N R132W) in Slope County. Approximately 1400 piles will be burned on private and Federal ground, which is expected to begin March 25, 2024, and continue through the end of the week, as weather allows. Additionally, approximately 15 piles are slated for burning on the Sheyenne Ranger District about five miles east of McLeod on March 26, 2024.
Once burning begins, smoke may be visible for long distances.

Fire crews from the USDA Forest Service – Dakota Prairie Grasslands and the North Dakota Forest Service will conduct the burns and will monitor the brush piles during burning. The fire crews will continue observing until there is no threat of a restart.

Addressing fuel loads in the pine stands will reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and improve their health and resilience to assure viability into the future.
