SARE - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education

The SARE Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program has celebrated 25 years since the program started. During the past three years the North Dakota SARE has been co-located in the Carrington Research Extension Center and the Ramsey County Extension Office.
SARE is a nationwide program that is funded by the National Institute of Food And agriculture, USDA. North Dakota SARE is part of the North Central Region SARE. The NCR SARE’s mission is to ‘strengthen rural communities, increase farm /ranch profitability, and improve the environment by supporting research and education’.
The North Central Region’s cultural history and agricultural prowess, combined with innovative new sustainable agriculture systems, strengthen rural communities and support healthy, productive, and profitable farms and ranches. NCR-SARE promotes sustainable agriculture through competitive grant programs that advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound, and good for communities.
The 12 NCR states—Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin—have a rich agricultural history. NCR-SARE’s challenge is to preserve its place in the front lines of agricultural production through innovative food and fiber systems that promote healthy communities, a healthy environment, and a healthy economy.

NCR-SARE has awarded more than $40 million worth of competitive grants to farmers and ranchers, researchers, educators, public and private institutions, nonprofit groups, and others exploring sustainable agriculture in 12 states.
