Mike Ostlie, Agronomist
The Researcher:
Michael Ostlie is a research agronomist at the CREC. His primary responsibilities include oversight of the agronomy research program as well as conducting research on timely topics affecting North Dakota producers, with a focus on weed science, plant health, and minor crops.
Michael grew up near Northwood, ND on a farm that raised wheat, barley, corn, soybean, edible bean, sunflowers, and sheep. He and his wife Lindsay enjoy the rural lifestyle provided by their farmstead near Carrington.
Michael completed his Ph.D. in weed science from Colorado State University in 2012, where he developed non-GMO wheat lines resistant to the Assure II herbicide. He received his M.S. in weed science and B.S. in crop and weed science from North Dakota State University, primarily working on downy brome control in no-till spring wheat.
The Research:
This research program is focused on a holistic approach to improving crop management in the Great Plains. All facets of agriculture are investigated including, but not limited to, cultivar evaluation, production inputs, cultural practices, production techniques, soil and environmental health, and biology and physiology of plants. With the ability to conduct comprehensive research we are able to facilitate increased productivity and improved land management strategies that benefit everyone involved.
Why it Matters:
The agronomy program at the Carrington Research Extension Center is good position to influence large regions of the upper Great Plains and beyond. The CREC is currently investigating a number of novel concepts and previous anecdotal observations from a research perspective to expand the current understanding of parameters used for crop management decision making. The research generated from this agronomy program will address practical solutions to production management problems that are often applicable to a large demographic and geographic area.
