Registration open for Rural Resilience Retreat in central North Dakota

The retreat focuses on wellness education and resources in agriculture.

Addressing the wellness needs of those working in agriculture or related areas will be the focus of a Rural Resilience Retreat sponsored by North Dakota State University Extension on Saturday, May 13 in Washburn, North Dakota. The event kicks off with registration and breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and continues with learning sessions and activities until 3:30 p.m.

The retreat is intended to address ongoing issues of farm/ranch stress and wellness needs in North Dakota. Speakers will focus on topics including realities in agriculture, emotions and communication, stress management, wellness efforts and self-care. The training will provide participants with awareness and skills to support the mental and behavioral health of themselves and others working in or supporting agriculture. Though focused on individuals working in and around agriculture, anyone interested in the topic can register.

“Ongoing farm and ranch stress takes a toll on health, including one’s mental and emotional well-being,” says Sean Brotherson, family science specialist with NDSU Extension. “We say, ‘Sometimes you need help; sometimes you are help.’”

“This program is focused on taking care of yourself and others working in agriculture, and the event is packed with information, activities and fun,” says Sarah Bedgar, NDSU Extension agent in McLean County. “We are excited to partner together and make this day of fun, learning and support available.”

The event is limited to 60 participants. The cost to attend is $40, which includes breakfast and lunch. Register online by May 7 at ndsu.ag/resilience. Late registrations may be accepted. After May 7, contact Bedgar at 701-462-9903, sarah.bedgar@ndsu.edu, or Courtney Hoikkala, NDSU Extension agent in Morton County, at 701-667-3340, courtney.hoikkala@ndsu.edu.

The retreat will be held at the Washburn United Methodist Church, 1033 Heritage Drive, Washburn, North Dakota.

The Rural Resilience Retreat is developed by Bedgar and Hoikkala and supported by several sponsors including Washburn Life, Apex Clean Energy, Farm Credit Services of Mandan and CommonGround North Dakota.
