N.D. Youth Compete in National 4-H Shooting Sports Event

The North Dakota team places 11th overall.

The North Dakota 4-H shooting sports compound archery team placed 11th overall at the recent National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Grand Island, Neb.

The team placed 10th in the 3-D competition, 15th in field archery and 11th in the FITA (Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc) round to secure the overall 11th place.

Four team members also placed individually. Quaid Larsen of Stark-Billings counties placed 27th, Jade Ellingson of Morton County placed 43rd, Jacob Ellingson of Morton County placed 47th and Skyler Bitz of Morton County placed 55th.

The team also included Blake Hensley of Morton County as an alternate. Jeff Ellingson and Greg Eider are the team’s coaches.

Members compete at the national level in teams, which consist of the top four individuals from state qualifying tournaments. Competitors must be 14 to 19 years old and may not compete at the national level in the same discipline twice.

The three-day national competition included 516 participants representing 34 states. Disciplines at the competition were compound and recurve archery, air pistol, air rifle, hunting, muzzle-loading, shotgun, small-bore pistol and small-bore rifle.

The goal of the 4-H shooting sports project is to teach life skills such as responsibility, critical thinking, sportsmanship, team building and ethical behavior while the youth learn safe handling of firearms, bow equipment and marksmanship.

The primary sponsors for the trip to the national competition were the Morton County Farm Bureau, Stark County Farm Bureau, North Dakota 4-H Foundation, Armstrong Co. and Roughrider Archers.
