Windbreak Renovation

The North Dakota Forest Service (NDFS) offers technical and financial assistance to private landowners to restore, protect and enhance planted or native forest.   Many planted shelterbelts and farmstead windbreaks in North Dakota have deteriorated due to age or disease and are no longer functional.  NDFS can assist landowners in assessing their windbreak condition and providing a written plan for renovating the windbreak to restore functionality.  NDFS also offers cost-share to implement the plan.

To help assist the review process, please complete and submit a Windbreak Renovation Questionnaire.  Our foresters will review the information you provide and offer additional technical assistance and help with applying for financial assistance.

Deadlines & Timelines

Next Deadline- Pool 4- April 30, 2017*

*Landowner pre-applications submitted between August 16, 2016 and April 30, 2017 will be in Pool 4.  Technical assistance for this pool will be provided in Spring 2017. Anticipated deadlines are subject to change.  Changes will be announced on the NDFS website.  Additional pools will be added if funds are available.

UPDATE

Due to staff reductions we will NOT be able to visit with any landowners who request windbreak renovation assistance after the previous April 30, 2017 batching period – Pool 4

Landowners who have had a Windbreak Renovation Plan written for their property by a North Dakota Forest Service staff member or representative may still apply for financial assistance at any time.

Landowners interested in windbreak renovation are encouraged to visit with local Soil Conservation District staff and local contractors to receive estimates for intended work on existing trees and for planting new trees.

We greatly appreciate the strong interest in the Windbreak Renovation Initiative and apologize for not being able to address the need in a timely manner. We are working to improve our ability to assist private forest landowners in North Dakota.
