Windbreak Renovation

The North Dakota Forest Service (NDFS) offers technical and financial assistance to private landowners to restore, protect and enhance planted or native forest.   Many planted shelterbelts and farmstead windbreaks in North Dakota have deteriorated due to age or disease and are no longer functional.  NDFS can assist landowners in assessing their windbreak condition and providing a written plan for renovating the windbreak to restore functionality.  NDFS also offers cost-share to implement the plan.

To help assist the review process, please complete and submit a Windbreak Renovation Questionnaire.  Our foresters will review the information you provide and offer additional technical assistance and help with applying for financial assistance.

Deadlines & Timelines

Next Deadline- April 30, 2018 - request a site visit by submitting the site-visit questionnaire

Funds are available to help restore planted windbreaks - and natural stands acting as windbreaks. Applications for cost-share are accepted continuously on a first-come, first-served basis. However, landowners MUST complete the online questionnaire to be scheduled for a site visit. Paper copies of the questionnaire can be provided, or answers taken over the phone.

Landowners will be contacted in the spring by ND Forest Service or Soil Conservation District staff to schedule a visit to the property.

Applications for cost-share can only be submitted once an approved management plan has been written for the project. Landowners who already have a management plan for their property may apply for financial assistance at any time.

Landowners interested in windbreak renovation are encouraged to visit with local Soil Conservation District staff and local contractors to receive estimates for intended work on existing trees and for planting new trees.

We greatly appreciate the strong interest in the Windbreak Renovation Initiative and apologize for not being able to address the need in a more timely manner. We are working to improve our ability to assist private forest landowners in North Dakota.
