Full Agenda

Join biochar expert Kelpie Wilson (Wilson Biochar Associates) to learn how charred biomass (biochar) can increase soil carbon and regenerate soil while improving productivity. Get hands-on instruction on how to make biochar on the farm with tools that you already have. Learn how to use and apply biochar and hear from practitioners who are already doing it. Be part of a brainstorming session to share ideas for biochar systems that can enhance crop production, tree health, livestock health and manure management.

Attendees will:

  • be introduced to the chemistry and biology of biochar at scales ranging from atoms to the biosphere
  • learn how biochar sequesters carbon while improving soil health and plant productivity in a variety of crops and soils
  • learn about novel applications of biochar such as a cattle feed supplement to improve animal health and productivity
  • understand how biochar can preserve valuable nutrients and increase the efficiency of manure management and composting
  • understand available technology options for biochar production at different scales
  • become familiar with the production of biochar through hands-on demonstrations
  • hear from producers and experts about how they have been using and applying biochar to crops in the Great Plains
