Landscaping and Gardening

Landscaping

In the past, xeriscaping was the theme of the landscaping around the main building and the Ernie French Center addition. In essence, xeriscaping involves selecting plants with low water needs and using only rainfall as the source of irrigation.

As things change over time, so do our efforts. Among the biggest changes our landscaping has seen in recent years is the newly added Neil Riveland addition and sprinkler irrigation system. Therefore, change seems to be the new running theme these past few years. And with that, it's important to remember that landscapes are dynamic; always evolving. One of the advantages of this concept is the opportunity to add new plants from the ever increasing hardy plant selections that are becoming available to us in northwestern ND. Perennials are the classic example for the dynamic landscape in that they can be moved, divided, cut back, and added back in to provide enjoyment for the gardener each year. Annuals are another great way to change up the landscape by adding a little color or a unique texture. Different combinations can be tried every year. Shrubs and trees provide the backbone to the landscape; giving it life in the winter and shelter for wildlife.

Perennial Hardiness Trial

This trial was established in collaboration with NDSU Extension Horticulturist Dr. Esther McGinnis which aims to evaluate the cold hardiness of new cultivars of both Echinacea and Heuchera. WREC planted 14 varieties of Coneflower (Echinacea sp.) and 16 varieties of Coral Bell (Heuchera sp.) on June 4th 2015. The trial was evaluated in the fall based on observations of their aesthetic qualities for the landscape which included ratings of ornamental value and pest incidence. The trial will be evaluated in the spring to see which cultivars survived the winter and will still be of landscape value in our area.
