ND Shelterbelt Inventory Results

Shelterbelts play an important role in North Dakota by protecting crops, homesteads, livestock and roadways. However, there are a limited number of tree species appropriate for planting in specific parts of the state. The goal of this project was to identify potential new tree species for conservation plantings throughout North Dakota. With the help of local Soil Conservation Districts and landowners, sites were located and inventoried in summers of 2018 and 2019. The results from this project may be used to determine if these species might be appropriate future shelterbelts in North Dakota.

This website is the main hub for the results of the ND Shelterbelt Inventory project. Results are organized by Eastern and Western halves of the state to align with the Natural Resources Conservation Services' (NRCS) Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs) (shown below). Within both Eastern and Western results will be categorized into three tables. The first table is a summary of all the species inventoried in the East and West. The second table is the summary of survival and Conservation Tree and Shrub Group (CTSG) species where there were 5 sites inventoried. The third table is a detailed spreadsheet of each species in table 2 of the results which includes individual site and CTSG information.
