NDSU Extension to host July dry bean field days in Forest River and Hatton

Participants will hear dry bean breeding updates, crop productivity tips and more.

North Dakota State University Extension, in partnership with the Northarvest Bean Growers Association, will host two dry bean field days on July 21 in Forest River, North Dakota, and July 22 in Hatton, North Dakota.

The field days will provide growers, crop advisers, industry professionals and researchers the opportunity to learn about the latest advances in dry bean production through field demonstrations and discussions led by NDSU specialists.

“Dry beans continue to play an important role in North Dakota agriculture, and these field days are an excellent opportunity to share the latest research directly with producers,” says Ana Carcedo, NDSU Extension broadleaf crop agronomist. “Our goal is to provide practical, research-based recommendations that growers can immediately apply in their operations.”

The program will feature a guided tour of the NDSU dry bean breeding nursery led by Juan Osorno, NDSU professor and dry bean breeder. Attendees can explore new dry bean varieties in the breeding pipeline and learn about the traits and characteristics being developed for future commercial release.

Carcedo will present the latest recommendations on efficient nitrogen management in dry beans, discussing strategies to optimize nitrogen use, improve crop productivity and maximize economic returns.

Additional presentations include weed management updates from Joe Ikley, NDSU Extension weed specialist, and disease management recommendations from Sam Markell, NDSU Extension plant pathologist. Both sessions will focus on practical, integrated management strategies to help producers address some of the most important production challenges facing dry bean growers.

Following the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact directly with the speakers during an open discussion.

Participation is free, and lunch will be provided. Registration is requested to assist organizers with meal planning.

The dry bean field days are made possible through the support of the Northarvest Bean Growers Association.
