NDSU Extension to hold liquid manure workshop on Oct. 1

Speakers will discuss research completed on the uses of liquid swine manure and in-season application on corn.

Crop producers are urged to attend a one-day workshop at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center on Oct. 1 to learn about using liquid livestock manure as a fertilizer. The workshop will begin with registration and refreshments at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. CDT.

“I am excited to host a lineup of speakers who have worked with, have done research on and are passionate about using liquid manure in cropping systems,” says Mary Keena, NDSU Extension livestock environmental management specialist.

The morning will kick off with an overview of livestock development and liquid manure availability in North Dakota. Rules and regulations for applying manure in North Dakota will also be covered, as well as comparing and contrasting commercial fertilizer, solid manure and liquid manure.

“The importance of understanding how these products function similarly and differently cannot be overemphasized,” says Keena. “We can only use them correctly if we understand what they are and how they function.”

Research completed in Minnesota and Ohio on the uses of liquid swine manure and in-season application on corn will be discussed, as well as soil and manure sampling and understanding nutrient analysis.

The workshop will conclude with a discussion on the safety and response to a liquid manure spill.

“Personal, personnel and environmental safety all come into play when dealing with any kind of nutrient source,” says Keena. “Responding quickly and correctly to an accident becomes second nature if you have proper training in those areas.”

Workshop speakers include the following:

  • Amber Wood, North Dakota Livestock Alliance executive director
  • Keena, NDSU Extension livestock environmental management specialist
  • Chryseis Modderman, University of Minnesota Extension educator
  • Melissa Wilson, University of Minnesota Extension associate professor
  • Glen Arnold, Ohio State University Extension manure nutrient management specialist
  • Brady Goettl, NDSU Extension soil science specialist
  • Kevin Erb, University of Wisconsin – Madison Extension outreach program manager

Lunch is sponsored by the North American Manure Expo Board, and registration is requested for an appropriate headcount. Continuing education units for certified crop advisers have been applied for.
