Farm first-aid kit training coming to northeast North Dakota

Participants will build a farm first-aid kit and learn how to use the items in the case of serious injury while working on the farm.

Injuries that take place on the farm can be unique and severe, requiring immediate care before professional help arrives. To address this critical need, NDSU Extension is providing a Farm First-Aid Kit Training during the Farm Safety and Stop the Bleed Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshops will be held at the NDSU Langdon Research Extension Center.

This hands-on workshop is designed for farmers, their families and employees to learn how to manage traumatic farm injuries and build their own farm first-aid kits.

“In rural areas where ambulance response time can stretch to 30 minutes or more due to rurality, immediate action is critical,” says Lahni Stachler, NDSU Extension agent in Cavalier County. “Knowing how to respond to injuries like severe bleeding, burns or crush injuries before the ambulance arrives can mean the difference between life and death.”

Stachler, along with Angie Johnson, NDSU Extension farm and ranch safety specialist, are delivering this training session to empower farm families to respond effectively to emergencies. This follows the success of previous first-aid kit sessions held during the International Crop Expo in Grand Forks.

“By crafting your own farm first-aid kit, you walk away with the knowledge and readiness of administering aid, knowing firsthand what tools you have, as well as the education and confidence to use items found in the kit to make a difference in the case of a severe injury or potentially save someone’s life,” says Johnson.

The Langdon event will feature interactive sessions led by NDSU Extension and area healthcare professionals, covering topics such as:

  • How to use a tourniquet to stop the bleed
  • Handling amputated limbs
  • Treating burns on the farm
  • Slips, trips and falls - How to use a splint

At the conclusion of the training, each participating farm operation will assemble and take home a fully stocked farm first-aid kit, ready to be stored in a tractor, shop or other accessible location on their operation.

This event is made possible through the generous support of 16 local sponsors: AG 365, Alsen Farmers Elevator, Cavalier County Farm Bureau, Choice Bank, CHS, Farmers & Merchants State Bank, Farmers Union Oil Co., Horizon Financial Bank, Langdon Implement, Langdon Prairie Health, Mike Zeis Crop Insurance Agency, Mostad Insurance Services, NorChemCo, Schill Construction, Simplot and TR Waind Insurance Agency. This assistance has supplied the materials for 50 farm first-aid kits.

Lunch will be provided at no cost and there is no fee to attend. However, registration is highly recommended to ensure adequate materials and meals.

To register, please call 701-256-2560 or visit the NDSU Extension office at the Cavalier County Courthouse (901 3rd St, Langdon, North Dakota, 58249).
