NDSU Extension to host predator and wildlife management workshop

The workshop aims to shed light on the unique dynamic between domestic livestock and wildlife, and share best practices for managing predation from wildlife.

In collaboration with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s APHIS Wildlife Services Department, NDSU Extension is bringing a Predator and Wildlife Management Workshop to southwest North Dakota on June 5, in Hettinger, North Dakota.

“Wildlife has long been seen as being in rivalry with domestic livestock production,” says Aspen Lenning, NDSU Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources in Adams County. “NDSU Extension hopes to shed light on the unique dynamic between domestic livestock and wildlife, and share some best practices for managing predation from wildlife with lethal and non-lethal methods.”

The program will begin at 10 a.m. MDT at the Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) Livestock Lab located at 105 1st Ave. W, Hettinger, ND.

“In our region, coyotes are the most discussed troublesome wildlife; we hope to share useful information to be able to manage their population better,” shares Lenning.

“Managing predator pressure is a key piece in safeguarding vulnerable livestock and minimizing production losses, but there is a balance to keep in mind when it comes to areas where wildlife and livestock coexist and both contribute to a balanced ecosystem,” says Rachel Gibbs, NDSU Extension livestock specialist at the HREC.

To register for the Predator and Wildlife Management Workshop visit, ndsu.ag/predatorworkshop. The cost to attend is $20 per person, and participants will be provided with lunch.

Registrations are due by May 29 to the NDSU Extension – Adams County office.
