NDSU Oakes Irrigation Research Site Field Day set for Aug. 7

Crop agronomics, weed control and disease management are among the topics that will be covered during the annual field day at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC) – Oakes Irrigation Research Site on Aug. 7. The field day consists of a tour of the site and select research being conducted this season.
Mike Ostlie, director of the CREC, says the site has undergone many changes over the past year, and he’s excited to show participants what the space has to offer.
The tour starts at 9 a.m. with a free morning refreshment sponsored by Starion Bank.
Topics and speakers are the following:
- Partnership Award presentation to Garrison Diversion Conservancy District – Mike Ostlie, CREC director
- Potato trials and onion weed control – Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, high-value crops specialist
- Corn diseases: Scouting and management decisions – Andrew Friskop, Extension cereal plant pathologist
- Increasing fertilizer N uptake: How much will split-applying get us? – Kelsey Griesheim, NDSU School of Natural Resource Sciences soil fertility assistant professor, and Megan Culpitt, master’s student at the NDSU School of Natural Resource Sciences
- NDSU’s Nitrogen fertilizer recommendation – Brady Goettl, Extension soil science specialist
- Optimizing soybean seeding rate, fungicide droplet size and application timing relative to soybean row spacing for improved white mold management in soybeans – Michael Wunsch, plant pathologist at the CREC
- Tackling soybean diseases with a proactive approach – Wade Webster, Extension soybean pathology specialist
After the presentations, a free lunch for attendees sponsored by BankNorth, AgTegra Cooperative and Starion Bank will be served. A sneak peek tour of the new headquarters building under construction will be provided. Attendees can also register to win a Solo Stove smokeless fire pit donated by Proseed.
