Farmers, crop advisers and agricultural industry representatives are invited to view field research trials and receive production recommendations on soybean and dry bean during the annual row crop field tour on Thursday, Aug. 29, at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center.

Registration begins at 4 p.m., with the tour starting promptly at 4:30. Topics are:

• Weed identification with an emphasis on pigweeds
• Weed seed destructor, including a demonstration of a Redekop Seed Control Unit
• Dry bean variety overview
• White mold management:
  • Soybean – Fungicide spray volume impact on reducing disease
  • Dry bean – Optimum fungicide application timing, interval and droplet size
• Soybean root and stem disease: Season incidence and future management
• Maintaining soil productivity with beans in the crop sequence

“Our annual field day is a few weeks early for showcasing row crops, so this mid-season event highlights late-season crops at their best, with a particular focus this year on soybean and dry bean,” says Greg Endres, organizer of this year’s row crop tour.

Tour speakers include NDSU agronomists Mike Ostlie, Kristin Simons and Endres; NDSU plant pathologists Michael Wunsch and Wade Webster; NDSU assistant dry bean breeder Jose Figueroa Cerna; and NDSU Extension soil science specialist Brady Goettl.

A supper sponsored by the North Dakota Soybean Council and Northarvest Bean Growers Association will follow the tour.

Continuing education credits will be available for certified crop advisers participating in the event.
