Tyler Joins NDSU Extension as Rural Leadership North Dakota Program Director

She will coordinate community-based seminars to help participants grow in leadership and civic engagement.

Katie Tyler has joined North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension as Extension specialist and program director for Rural Leadership North Dakota (RLND).

She started Oct. 25 and will office out of the main NDSU campus in Fargo.

Tyler will provide leadership for the coordination of the RLND program, focusing on transformational education programs and connecting participants to viable community projects. She will coordinate community-based RLND seminars and targeted interventions to improve expanded leadership and civic engagement outcomes.

Enhancing North Dakota communities and developing leaders across the state is important to Tyler.

“The Rural Leadership North Dakota program is a dynamic program that explores local issues, provides opportunities for personal and professional growth in individuals, and creates a culture of resilience, problem solving and involvement that is beneficial to our state,” says Tyler. “The opportunity to work on this elite leadership program is an honor.”

“Katie comes with 15 years of experience in higher education and Extension and brings a diverse set of skills to the position,” says Carrie Johnson, interim assistant director and family and community wellness program leader. “I look forward to working with her to expand RLND and other leadership and civic engagement programs throughout the state.”

Tyler most recently was director of enrollment services at Minot State University for six years. Prior to that, she was a 4-H youth development specialist with NDSU Extension for five years and an associate director of student activities with Philadelphia University for four years.

She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of North Dakota.

“Rural Leadership North Dakota has a strong tradition of enhancing the leadership roles of program participants in North Dakota,” says Barry Medd, RLND council chair. “I am excited for Katie to bring her energy and enthusiasm to RLND to ensure a strong future and continuation of excellence.”
