2021 Dickinson Research Extension Center Field Day Set for July 14

The tour will focus on current agronomic research at the DREC.

Postharvest cleanout will be among the topics presented during the annual summer field day July 14 at North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Extension Center (DREC).

The program begins with registration at 8 a.m. at the center’s headquarters in Dickinson and ends with lunch provided by the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee at noon.

 Field day topics and presenters are:

  • Current agronomic research at the DREC and soil pH overview - Chris Augustin, soil scientist and DREC director, and Ryan Buetow, NDSU Extension cropping systems specialist, DREC
  • Weather, soil, disease and interactions – Dave Franzen, NDSU Extension soil science specialist, and Andrew Friskop, NDSU Extension plant pathologist
  • Resistance and issues of concern in broadleaf crops - Sam Markell, NDSU Extension plant pathologist, and T.J. Prochaska, NDSU Extension cropping system specialist at the North Central Research Extension Center
  • Combine cleanout, weeds and factors impacting control - Joe Ikley, NDSU Extension weed specialist, and Caleb Dalley, NDSU weed scientist at the Hettinger Research Extension Center
  • Current and emerging markets - David Ripplinger, NDSU Extension bioproducts/bioenergy economist

A soil sampling workshop will be held after the field day from 1 to 4 p.m. at the DREC.

Workshop speakers are Buetow; Augustin; Franzen; Leo Bortolon, NDSU Extension cropping systems specialist;  Doug Landblom, DREC animal scientist; and John Breker, AGVISE soil scientist.

The workshop will cover impacts of season and weather on sampling decisions, biological benchmark testing, and North Dakota trends and the value of zone testing, along with an exercise on sampling for stratified acidity and using a pH probe.

Producers also will be able to view weeds and insects with presenters at an integrated pest management table before and after the field day.
