North Dakota agricultural producers, certified crop advisers, agribusiness representatives, conservation agents and Extension Service personnel have an opportunity to learn about cover crops and soil health at a national conference the Soil and Water Conservation Society is holding Dec. 7-8 in Indianapolis, Ind.
“The National Conference on Cover Crops and Soil Health will give North Dakotans a chance to gain information on how cover crops are being used throughout the U.S. and hear from other producers, conservation leaders and scientists on how to improve soil health,” says Karl Hoppe, North Dakota State University Extension Service area livestock systems specialist and co-coordinator for North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) in North Dakota.
Of the more than 40 presenters at the conference, nearly half are producers with years of cover cropping experience. They include producers who have received NCR-SARE grants to help them improve their operation.
Topics that will be covered include:
- Strategies for planting commodity crops into cover crops
- Adjusting nutrient management when using cover crops
- Best strategies and timing for terminating cover crops
- Grazing approaches for cover crops
- Using cover crops to control herbicide-resistant weeds
- Latest insights on soil health testing and soil biology
Attendees also will be able visit with exhibitors in the cover crop and soil health fields and take farm bus tours.
The preregistration deadline is Nov. 7.
