Grand Forks, Foster Teams Win 4-H Crops Judging Contest

4-H’ers compete in the crops judging contest at the North Dakota Winter Show.

A Grand Forks County team placed first in the senior division of the 4-H crops judging contest held at the Valley City Eagles Club in conjunction with the North Dakota Winter Show.

Team members are Collin Granger and Tanner Granger of Reynolds; Kristina Hathaway, Jonathan Waterman and Sarah McNaughton of Grand Forks; and Aaron Tangsrud of Buxton. Laurie Kraemer and Cheryl Granger are the team’s coaches.

Collin Granger also was the high individual scorer in the senior division.

Foster County’s team placed second and the Mountrail County team placed third in the senior division.

A Foster County team also placed first in the contest’s junior division. Team members are Ann Endres, Jayden Rosenau, Brittany Aasand, Jill Endres, Bailey Retzlaff and Claire Endres, all of Carrington. Bruce Bachmeier and Joel Lemer are the team’s coaches.

A team from Grand Forks placed second and LaMoure County’s team placed third in the junior division. The high individual award in the junior division went to Daniel Kramer of Grand Forks.

Crop judging participants evaluate samples of wheat, barley, durum, oats and flax for seed quality. They also identify crop and weed seeds and plants, determine market grade of wheat or durum and identify factors affecting market quality of wheat, barley and soybeans.

First-place teams and high-scoring individuals received plaques sponsored by the North Dakota Crop and Seed Improvement Association.
