NDSU Dickinson Center to Host Composting Event

Livestock producers can learn how to create and manage compost.

The North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center, with cooperation from the Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange, will host a daylong compost demonstration event Aug. 16.

“The compost demonstration day will be a great opportunity for livestock producers to learn about creating compost from manure and managing compost,” says Chris Augustin, NDSU Extension Service area nutrient management specialist.

The event starts at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain time) at the center.

During the morning, Augustin will discuss the basics of managing manure composts. Also, Larry Schnell of Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange will provide a compost turner demonstration at the sale yard.

Following lunch (on your own), the workshop will reconvene at the Dickinson Research Extension Center. Afternoon topics and presenters include:

  • Composting dead animals - Teresa Dvorak, NDSU Extension livestock nutrient management specialist
  • Fertility, benefits and economics of composting - Ron Wiederholt, NDSU Extension nutrient management specialist
  • Regulations related to composting and site selections - Karl Rockeman, North Dakota Department of Health

The event is free of charge but registration is required. To register, contact Augustin at (701) 652-2951 or chris.augustin@ndsu.edu.
