If you’re looking for adventure this summer, try the Western 4-H Camp near Washburn.

Youth can attend a variety of camps to have fun while developing lifelong skills, trying new activities, learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle and discovering what they can accomplish, all in a safe environment.

But the camps aren’t just for 4-H members.

“Some parents think that because the name of the facility is Western 4-H Camp, it is open just to 4-H members, but the camp and its programs are open to all youth ages 6 to 18,” says Brad Cogdill, North Dakota State University Center for 4-H Youth Development director. “The various camps we are offering this summer range from learning basic outdoor skills to supporting youth of military families.”

The dates and age group for which the camps are designed are:

• June 1-5: Wish I Had a Horse Camp I, 8 to 10; Livestock Camp, 8 and older
• June 6-10: Military Youth Camp I (Operation: Military Kids), 8 to 14 (new this year)
• June 13-17: Survivor Outdoor Recreation Camp, 9 and older
• June 20-23: Barrel and Pole Horse Camp, 8 and older
• June 27-July 1: Military Youth Camp II (OMK), 8 to 11
• July 5-8: Amazing Race Camp, 10 and older; Trail Riding Horse Camp, 8 and older
• July 11-15: Military Youth Camp III (OMK), 12 to 14
• July 16-17: Clover Camp, 6 to 8
• July 18-22: Beginning Outdoor Skills Camp, 8 to 14; Lights, Camera, Action Camp, 8 to 13
• Aug. 1-5: Baking Boot Camp, 8 to 15; Wish I Had a Horse Camp II, 8 to 10

“We are committed to providing a safe environment where children can make new friends and develop new skills while enjoying the beauty of the cottonwoods along the Missouri River,” Cogdill says. “Staff members are trained in nature, crafts, recreation, first aid, human development and working with youth to ensure a high-quality experience for campers.”
