N.D. 4-H Youth Place in National Competition

North Dakota 4-H teams place at this year’s Western National Roundup in Denver.

Three teams of North Dakota 4-H youth participated in this year’s Western National Roundup in Denver.

4-H and FFA members age 14 to 19 qualify to compete in the Western National Roundup by winning their state’s contest or being chosen as a state delegate.

At the national level, youth compete in horse, livestock and meat judging; hippology (a 4-H equine study that covers all areas of horsemanship); horse demonstrations; public speaking; parliamentary procedure; family and consumer science presentations; and a skill-a-thon and bowl. They also attend workshops on topics such as communication, team building and leadership development.

The Wells County 4-H hippology team placed second in the team problem category, fifth in judging, seventh in stations, 10th in exam and ninth overall. The competition consisted of five areas: four classes of horse judging (two performance and two halter classes), a 100-question test on horse knowledge, 50-slide identification, 10 stations of identification and four team problems.

The team members were Cody Perbix, Anna Richter and Chelsey Schafer.

Individually, Perbix placed first in the horse judging division. He received a horse statue and ribbon. Schafer placed seventh in stations.

The Oliver County 4-H consumer choices team, consisting of Ashley Giedd, Kristin Liffrig, Brittney Klein and John Klein, placed third in group decision, fifth in placings and reasons, and fourth overall.

The Burleigh County 4-H horse judging team placed seventh in performance and reasons, eighth in halter and eighth overall. The team members were Caryn Scholl, Ross Stanley, Kodi Lardy and Abby Lengenfelder.

Individually, Lengenfelder placed fifth in performance, seventh in reasons and ninth overall.
