Schwab Honored for 4-H Volunteerism

A North Dakota 4-H volunteer receives national recognition.

David Schwab of Lisbon has been named the 2009 North Central 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year for his contributions as a volunteer leader in the Ransom County 4-H Shooting Sports program.

As a qualified archery instructor, Schwab launched the Ransom County 4-H Shooting Sports program more than eight years ago. Since then, he has networked with local businesses and sporting goods stores to acquire funding and equipment, and recruited several volunteers to teach archery classes to young 4-H members.

Schwab also makes certain that all his members understand how to handle a firearm properly and obey safety rules. As a result of his efforts, Ransom County 4-H has seen a huge increase in enrollment.

“David has gone above and beyond to start the Shooting Sports program in Ransom County, and his continual dedication to the 4-H members is what makes this program a success year after year,” said Brian Zimprich, a Ransom County Extension agent. “He is very deserving of the North Central Volunteer of the Year Award.”

Schwab also teamed up with 4-H members to create an educational Shooting Sports video. The project gave young people an opportunity to demonstrate proper shooting techniques, as well as learn how to communicate in a professional, respectful manner.

“David always encourages us to do our best,” said Jacob and Hannah Schlecht, Sargent County 4-H members. “He doesn’t like to see anyone struggle or get frustrated, and he gives helpful suggestions on how to hold our bow, find our anchor points and improve our release. He is a great mentor and we are happy to nominate him for the North Central Volunteer of the Year Award.”

Schwab will be recognized at the North Central Region 4-H Volunteer Forum on Oct. 1-4 in Lincoln, Neb. He will receive $200 to donate to a local 4-H program of his choice, a travel scholarship to participate in the Volunteer Forum and a recognition plaque.

Gene and Sharon Swackhamer established the National 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Fund to emphasize the important work of 4-H volunteers across America. The awards, made possible through the fund and Monsanto Co., recognize 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege.

Volunteers are honored in two categories: Lifetime Volunteer, which is for more than 10 years of service to 4-H, and Volunteer of the Year, for less than 10 years of service.
