New Barley Information Available On NDSU Web Site

The North Dakota State University Institute of Malting and Barley Sciences (IBMS) Web site has new information available to answer producer questions. Go to http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/ibms/index.html and click on Education.

The information was delivered during producer meetings held in January at various locations in North Dakota and Montana. Approximately 200 barley producers, elevator managers, industry representatives and NDSU Extension Service personnel attended the meetings.

Topics on the Web include:

  • Barley economics for 2009
  • Food barley
  • 2009 barley insurance update
  • Barley outlook for 2009
  • Barley irrigation
  • Fertility consideration
  • Barley risk management strategies
  • American Malting Barley Association update
  • 2009 barley variety update
  • Principles of feeding barley to cattle
  • Effect of fertilizer and planting rates on dryland malt barley
  • Barley rotation and variety selection
  • Crop contract considerations
  • Barley Coordinated Agricultural Project update
  • IBMS update
  • Barley quality
  • Insect problems in barley
  • Barley opportunities and challenges

“This is an opportunity for those who could not attend the meetings to get up-to-date information from the Web site,” says Karen Hertsgaard, IBMS information specialist. “The information is especially valuable as producers make considerations for spring planting.”

Most of the presentations can be downloaded or printed from the Web site. For more information, contact Hertsgaard at (701) 231-5384 or e-mail karen.hertsgaard@ndsu.edu.
