North Dakota sheep producers to host convention in Medora

The event will feature educational sessions and a special youth program.

The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association (NDLWPA) will hold its 2025 annual convention Oct. 3-4 at the Rough Riders Hotel in Medora, North Dakota.

The convention, in partnership with North Dakota State University Extension, will bring together producers, researchers, industry experts and youth for two days of networking, learning and celebration of the sheep and lamb industry. With a theme centered on innovation and collaboration, the event will feature a dynamic schedule of activities, educational sessions and a special youth program.

Golf enthusiasts can join for a golf tournament on Friday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. at Bully Pulpit, and the convention events begin at 5:30 p.m. with a youth-focused sheep reproduction demonstration, a social and a fundraiser auction.

“We welcome all sheep producers to become members and join the excitement at this year’s convention,” says Travis Hoffman, Extension sheep specialist for NDSU and University of Minnesota. “This is a chance to learn from fellow producers and for our youth to excel with their sheep operation.”

Saturday’s agenda includes morning sessions featuring a market outlook, an American Sheep Industry update, an American Lamb Board presentation and the annual business meeting.

Further education sessions include the following:

  • Wildlife Services Update — Carl Frey, North Dakota Department of Agriculture wildlife services director
  • Lamb Supply Chain Innovation — Travis Hoffman, NDSU/UMN Extension sheep specialist
  • Animal Performance Tracking — Rachel Gibbs, NDSU ruminant systems management specialist at NDSU’s Hettinger Research Extension Center
  • Accelerated Lambing and Fall Lambing — Christopher Schauer, NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center director

After the sessions, there will be an alternative production sheep producer panel discussion and Q&A.

NDLWPA and NDSU Extension will also offer a dedicated youth program, which begins Friday evening, led by Rachel Gibbs, NDSU ruminant systems management specialist. The program will engage young producers in hands-on activities and learning. Saturday also has youth-focused programming.

Attendees can register on site, or registration can be sent to Jannell Lagein, 7255 94th Street NE, Rock Lake, North Dakota 58365.
