NDSU Extension to host December horse management webinars

The webinars will feature discussions on equine disease traceability, winter manure management tips and financial aspects of horse ownership.

North Dakota State University Extension will host three final horse management webinars of 2025 on Dec. 3, 10 and 17 at noon CST.

In the Dec. 3 webinar, Dr. Ethan Andress, North Dakota state veterinarian, will lead the discussion in a webinar titled “Stable Safeguards: Traceability and Biosecurity for Equine Diseases.”

“Traceability in our equine herd is crucial when it comes to diseases, such as the recent equine herpesvirus (EHV) outbreak,” says Dr. Andress. “While we rely on biosecurity safeguards to prevent diseases, such as limiting the sharing of equipment, it is vital to be able to trace where animals have been so we know which to watch more closely for health-related issues stemming back to an outbreak.”

On Dec. 10, Mary Keena, NDSU Extension livestock environmental management specialist at NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center, will lead the discussion in a webinar titled “Stable Solutions: Managing Manure in Winter.”

“This webinar will be an open discussion with participants about how winter management practices affect spring management practices,” says Keena. “Small changes in manure and bedding cleanout, as well as snow management in and around outdoor drylots, can impact things in the spring when thaw is occurring, particularly when it comes to surface water pollution potential.”

On Dec. 17, Paige Brummund, NDSU Extension’s agriculture and natural resources agent in Ward County, will lead the discussion in a webinar titled “Stable Finances: What It Takes to Afford a Horse.”

“While owning a horse is rewarding in many aspects, it also costs money,” says Brummund. “This webinar will discuss the many facets of budgeting for horse ownership, including the mundane, such as feed; the fun, such as training; and the surprises, such as emergencies.”
