Sheep and goat herd health webinar set for Aug. 8

Topics include hoof diseases, hoof trimming, and pre-breeding management.

The University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University Extension will host a sheep and goat herd health management webinar on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

“This is a tremendous chance to learn from our animal health colleagues regarding your sheep and goat operations,” says Travis Hoffman, NDSU and UMN Extension sheep specialist.

Presenters include veterinarians Dr. Whitney Knauer and Dr. Emily Barrell, both of University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Knauer will discuss pre-breeding management for sheep and goats. Dr. Barrell will focus on hoof diseases and the basics of hoof trimming to prepare for fall.

Dr. Knauer, a Pennsylvania native, has earned degrees from the University of Vermont, the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Minnesota. She joined the faculty in the fall of 2017 as an assistant professor of dairy production medicine and has been an avid supporter of goat and sheep production with students and producers.

Dr. Barrell, a Colorado native, has earned professional and veterinary degrees from Colorado State University and joined the University of Minnesota in January 2018.

“Hoof maintenance and animal health prior to breeding are key to small ruminant success,” says Hoffman. “Join us to ask questions, as our UMN veterinary team share their talents and expertise.”

Farmers and ranchers, 4-H and FFA members, ag business professionals and those interested in sheep are invited to attend.

Pre-registration is required. To register, visit ndsu.ag/sg-herd-health. Participants will receive a Zoom link upon registration and a recording after the event. For additional information, contact Brenda Miller at nels4220@umn.edu or Hoffman at travis.w.hoffman@ndsu.edu
