4-H 'ers place in North Dakota State Crop Show

The top samples in the 4-H division competed in the championship division.

Several 4-H members placed in the championship division of the 2023 North Dakota State Crop Show held during the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City. The crop show includes divisions for 4-H youth, FFA youth and adults or other state residents (open division).

Competitors may exhibit crop samples grown in North Dakota during either of the last two crop seasons. Each participant may enter only one sample per lot. The championship division includes all blue-ribbon crop samples from the 4-H, FFA and open divisions.

In the 4-H division, each youth receives a blue, red or white ribbon for their crop sample quality in each lot. The top blue ribbon sample in a lot becomes the champion 4-H exhibit. Sponsors support a premium for each ribbon – $5 for each blue ribbon, $3 for red and $1 for white. The champion 4-H exhibit in each lot receives $10.

In the championship division, the top four to six crop samples per lot receive up to a $100 premium with an adjustment in premium down to sixth place. Each crop premium varies according to sponsorship.

The 4-H division winners and their placings in the championship division were:

  • Harrison Lies, Wells County – 1st in pinto beans
  • Claire MacDonald, Cass County – 1st in millet
  • MacKenzie Motter, Steele County – 1st in red beans
