Dickinson Research Extension Center Field Day Set for July 13

Small grain diseases, on-farm research, grain bin safety and a crop market update will be among the topics.

Small grain diseases and on-farm research will be among the topics during the annual summer field day July 13 at North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) Dickinson Research Extension Center (DREC).

The program begins with registration and weed and insect identification at 8 a.m. MDT at the center’s headquarters in Dickinson and follows with lunch provided by the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee at noon. There will be a horticulture tour after lunch. 

 Field day topics and presenters are:

  • Weed and insect identification - Joe Ikley, NDSU Extension weed specialist and TJ Prochaska, NDSU Extension crop protection specialist at the North Central Research Extension Center (NCREC)
  • Introduction to the DREC - Chris Augustin, NDSU soil scientist and DREC director
  • Small grain diseases to watch for in 2022 - Andrew Friskop, NDSU Extension plant pathologist
  • NDSU wheat breeding program and traits to look out for - Andrew Green, NDSU wheat breeder
  • DREC agronomy projects and soil pH overview - Ryan Buetow, NDSU Extension cropping specialist at the DREC
  • Grain bin safety - Angie Johnson, NDSU Extension farm and ranch safety coordinator
  • Rhizobia and nitrogen fixation - Barney Geddes, NDSU assistant professor of microbiology
  • On-farm research and untapped potential - Leo Bortolon, NDSU Extension cropping systems specialist at the NCREC
  • Market update - Frayne Olson, NDSU Extension crop economist

  • What is a pollinator garden? - TJ Prochaska, NDSU Extension crop protection specialist, NCREC
  • Summer garden tips and lawn care - Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulture specialist
  • Hops variety trials - Jon Stika, DREC professional staff and homebrewer
  • Rehoming established trees - Blake Johnson, City of Dickinson forester
  • Soil testing - Chris Augustin, NDSU soil scientist and DREC director
