The North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences will host an educational event called “Branch Out: The NDSU Arboretum Experience” at the Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

The 35-acre arboretum is tucked into the countryside near Absaraka, North Dakota, and contains the largest collection of trees and shrubs in the northern Great Plains with over 5,000 species, cultivars and selections.

New this year, the event will feature four separate walking tours. Todd West, professor and the leader of the NDSU Woody Plant Improvement Program, and Connor Hagemeyer, research specialist, will lead the tours.

“The walking tours will be educational for homeowners that are new to landscaping as well as experienced individuals,” says Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension horticulturist. “A special tree walk for new homeowners will focus on low maintenance trees that thrive in the region and address problematic trees that should be avoided.”

“More experienced homeowners may want to consider the unique trees tour or the trees with multi-season interest tour,” says McGinnis. “The fourth walking tour will focus on selecting tough trees for tough sites.”

In addition to walking tours, presentations will include tree planting and aftercare as well as how to attract pollinators.

Don Kinzler, Extension horticulture agent for Cass County, is the keynote speaker and will present on frequently asked tree and shrub questions.

Special learning stations will engage participants on subjects such as ergonomic tools, pruning, NDSU woody plant research and how to identify emerald ash borer.

While the arboretum is a beautiful and educational place to spend an afternoon, its primary purpose is to evaluate, select, and introduce new trees and shrubs for the harsh northern climate and the variable soils of the Midwest. The NDSU Woody Plant Improvement Program recently released its 61^st woody plant introduction. Notable NDSU plant releases include Prairie Horizon Manchurian alder, Dakota Pinnacle Asian white birch, and Prairie Expedition® American elm.

Unlike previous years, advance registration will be required to facilitate a more intimate learning experience. Registration is $10 and will be capped at 100 participants. Registration will close on Sept. 6 at noon or once capacity is reached. No refunds will be provided for this event unless it is cancelled by the organizer.
