NDSU Kindergarten and School Readiness Study Seeks Interested Parents

The NDSU Extension Service is conducting a research project to understand how parents perceive their child’s preparation for kindergarten.

The first day of school for a child is filled with excitement and concern for parents. During the years leading up to kindergarten, parents often wonder if their child will be prepared for success in school and what they might do to help.

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is conducting a research project to understand how parents perceive their child’s preparation for kindergarten and provide resources to parents interested in school readiness.

Sean Brotherson and Sharon Query, NDSU family researchers, are seeking to answer questions on how parents and children are gearing up for kindergarten.

“We know that many parents are very concerned and interested in their child’s school readiness before kindergarten,” Brotherson says. “We want to learn how to help them prepare their children successfully.”

The Gearing Up for Kindergarten research project is looking for interested parents who are willing to complete two brief surveys on school readiness and parental practices. The surveys will be conducted in late 2008 and again in the spring. Interested parents must have a child preparing to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2009.

Participating individuals will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local retail store upon completion of the first survey and another $25 gift certificate upon completion of the second survey. Participation is limited to the first 125 individuals and one adult per family.

Interested parents can receive more information or enroll in the study by contacting Brotherson at (701) 231-8113 or send an e-mail to sean.brotherson@ndsu.edu. Participants must live in North Dakota. Please indicate your interest by Dec. 20.
