Master Gardener Diagnostician and Apprentice Guidelines

Master Gardener Diagnosticians have committed to an additional level of volunteerism within North Dakota. Diagnosticians are Certified Master Gardeners who have completed further training to diagnose pathological and entomological diseases of the horticultural world. They have also mastered the digital world, using our Ask an Expert tool to help with questions asked online from across the state.

Diagnostic Apprenticeship

Apprentice Diagnosticians (MGDA) are those who have completed the requirements of the Diagnostic Course and are now in their two year apprenticeship. During this two year period, the apprentice will complete 20 hours of diagnostic volunteer service within the state of North Dakota or a county bordering ND.

MGD and MGDA hours may be counted as part of the annual recertification requirement to remain an active Master Gardener.

Master Gardener Diagnostician

Certified Master Gardener Diagnosticians (MGD) are those who have completed the Diagnostic Course and apprenticeship requirement. Completing 8 diagnostic hours annually along with their volunteer and continuing education hours guarantees re-certification as a Diagnostician and MG.

MGD and MGDA hours may be counted as part of the annual recertification requirement to remain an active Master Gardener.

Find your Volunteer Hours Reporting Forms here. You may report Certified MG hours and Diagnostic hours together on this form.
