Red River Valley
Farm Tour - Present and Past
(1:00 - 6:30 p.m., July 11. Cost $20)
The tour will visit an 8,000 acre wheat and soybean
farm and a 3,000 acre soybean, wheat, sugarbeet and
corn farm. This will provide an understanding of current
Red River Valley agriculture. The last stop will be
at the Bagg farm. It is the last remaining example of
the Red River Valley Bonanza farms which existed in
the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. We will
enjoy the history and a picnic with pie for dessert.
Red River Valley
Sugarbeet Industry
North Dakota and Minnesota together produce about 55%
of the total US beet sugar. The total economic activity
of the sugarbeet industry, mainly in rural areas, was
$3 billion in 2003. Growers provide over $600,000 annually
in funding for sugarbeet research and Extension education
activities. The sugarbeet tour will include a visit
to sugarbeet research at Prosper, American Crystal Sugar
Company packaging and beet storage facilities at Moorhead,
and a sugarbeet
grower.
Animal Nutrition
Physiology/Livestock Tour
The Animal Nutrition Physiology Center is the centerpiece
of NDSU animal science research. The current building
was constructed in 2001 and is capable of housing beef
cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, swine, and small animal
research projects. The facility highlights the strong
collaborative research conducted by the Department of
Animal and Range Sciences, with special emphasis on
integrating ruminant nutrition and reproductive physiology
research. In addition to a tour of the building, NDSU
faculty and staff will highlight various aspects of
livestock research at NDSU.
