NDSU Extension in Grand Forks County to host Gardening Saturday event on April 5

Educational sessions include information on new and exciting plants, gardening for birds, strategies to prevent insect pests and many more.

Join North Dakota State University Extension - Grand Forks County for a day of gardening information at their Gardening Saturday event on April 5, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The event is sponsored by NDSU Extension - Grand Forks County, the Grand Forks Horticultural Society, Visit Greater Grand Forks and the Myra Foundation.

This year’s keynote speaker is Michelle Bruhn, who will present on Companion Planting from the Ground Up and Playing with Space by Growing Vertically.

Bruhn is a regenerative gardener who grew up in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She co-authored the book, Small-Scale Homesteading, is a freelance writer, speaker, regular contributor and teacher for the Minnesota Horticultural Society, and manages a farmer's market. Bruhn is also a mom to two boys, a dog and a flock of backyard hens. Bruhn’s Forks in the Dirt website helps people grow and eat local food.

In addition to the keynote speaker, there will be three concurrent sessions. Topics include:

  • 50 Tips to Make Us All Better Gardeners
  • Beyond the Bin: Creative Uses of Compost in Your Garden
  • Cottage Gardens and Heirloom Plants
  • Garden Floral Creation
  • Gardening for Birds
  • Managing Crabgrass in Lawns
  • New and Exciting Plants
  • Rain Barrels: Conserving Water in an Uncertain Climate
  • Strategies to Prevent Garden Insect Pests
  • Turning a Garden into a Food Forest
  • Make-and-Take Fun

There will also be a silent auction and gardening vendors to help gardeners get ready for spring planting.

The cost to attend Gardening Saturday is $50 and covers lunch and breaks. Registration closes on March 24.
