NDSU and UMN Extension to host pasture forage management webinar

Managing stocking densities, pasture rotation and planning for extreme weather events like drought can be applied to all livestock species.

North Dakota State University Extension and University of Minnesota Extension will host a sheep and goat webinar on March 25 at 7 p.m. Ryan Lermon, UMN Extension educator, will share management strategies to help farmers get the most forage out of their pasture.

Lermon will demonstrate how to calculate the amount of standing forage available in a pasture to make hay and for livestock to consume.

“Being able to figure out just how much forage is available in a pasture, at any point in time, is critical for summer grazing,” says Travis Hoffmann, Extension sheep specialist for NDSU and UMN.

Managing stocking densities, pasture rotation and planning for extreme weather events like drought can be applied to all livestock species.

“We have had drought challenges in recent years, and it is really important to monitor pasture forage levels to prevent overgrazing,” continues Hoffmann. “Starting the season strong with best management grazing practices can boost production and potentially prolong the grazing period.”

Farmers, 4-H’ers, agriculture business professionals and those interested in goats or sheep are invited to attend.

Preregistration is required. Register at ndsu.ag/gsforage25. The Zoom link will be emailed immediately after registration, and registrants will receive a webinar recording afterward.
