Beginning Sheep Producer Workshop Set for Sept. 21

Ewe and lamb health will be one of the topics covered.

New shepherds will be able to learn more about sheep management during a workshop set for Sept. 21 at North Dakota State University’s Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC).

The clinic starts at 10 a.m. MDT. The workshop is a joint effort of NDSU Extension, the HREC, and the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association, which is sponsoring the lunch.

Topics that will be covered during the clinic are:

  • Sheep breeding decisions
  • Ewe and lamb health
  • Lambing barn management
  • Sheep nutrition

“This educational event is geared for youth and novice producers, and provides them an opportunity to ask production questions and learn from each other,” says NDSU Extension sheep specialist Travis Hoffman.

Workshop participants will be able to tour the HREC sheep facilities as part of the day’s events.

In addition to the workshop, 10 young producers will pick up their new Rambouillet yearling ewes as part of the North Dakota Starter Flock program. This is the 16th year of the Starter Flock program.

“Our young people will be provided the expertise and tools to be a part of a bright sheep industry,” says Rachel Gibbs, HREC Extension livestock specialist. “We enjoy seeing beginning producers thrive and offering new people information to diversify an existing livestock operation.”

Registration for the clinic is free of charge. The registration deadline is Sept. 16 to confirm lunch numbers.
