Physiological Disorders of Potatoes
This presentation shows many physiological disorders of potatoes. These disorders can cause minor or major losses in tuber quality. They can be difficult to identify and replicate. This presentation was given at the 2018 Manitoba Potato Production Days meeting in Brandon, MB. Enjoy!

Chemical Drift in Potatoes
This presentation was given at the Potato Growers of Alberta conference. We discussed chemical drift in potatoes. The rates are formatted for a Canadian audience (L/a), but can be converted to oz/a by this formula: oz = L * 33.8.
NDSU NDAWN Potato Blight App
The NDSU NDAWN Potato Blight app is now available at no cost. This app work in conjunction of the North Dakota Agriculture Weather Network (NDAWN) utilizing weather data to determine late blight and early blight values for individual fields. Users may access current weather conditions at any NDAWN location. Users can subscribe to Blightline updates, early blight alerts, late blight alerts and inversion alerts.
Dicamba and Glyphosate Damage in Russet Burbank Seed Potatoes
There has been a lot of talk about dicamba injury in soybean and other crops this past year because of the release of dicamba-tolerant soybean, or the RoundupReady® 2 Xtend® soybean. However, dicamba is not new and has been in use for decades in cereal crops, pastureland, and as a weed burndown. For the past two growing seasons, we have been gathering data to determine what effect does dicamba and glyphosate have on Russet Burbank seed tubers.
Common Scab
Every year I get multiple questions about common scab. This potato blemish causes unwanted ugly, scabby lesions that spoil the appearance of the tuber and make them undesirable to consumers or difficult to process. Although there is no method known to completely control this disease, there are some management options that can help reduce the severity of common scab on potato.
Aphid Alert September 15, 2017
Although few aphids were captured this week, 2 sites reported Green Peach Aphids (2 from Brooks MN and 1 from Tappen ND). Otherwise only several other vector species were recovered from the traps.
Blightline Sep 12, 2017
No new late blight HAS been reported in the past two weeks. All of the late blight in ND, MN and MB was US23. This will be the final NDSU Potato Blightline for 2017.
Enlarged Lenticels - Focus on Potato
This presentation will assist growers, consultants, and other practitioners involved in all regions of the potato industry to better understand and manage enlarged lenticels. The presentation provides information on the development of lenticels, effects of lenticel infections and how to management lenticel spot.
Aphid Alert
Welcome to the Aphid Alert update for the week ending September 08. The colder weather has brought along at least one good thing, the aphid vector numbers took a real tumble this week. With only 6 sites reporting this week, only 34 vector aphids were recovered from across the area (that number was 244 last week!) Only one site had vector numbers in the double digits; Humboldt reported 12 vector species (compared to 93 last week). No Green Peach Aphids were recovered in the past week and Soybean Aphid numbers likewise were much lower.
Stubby-Root Nematodes and Corky Ring Spot of Potato - Focus on Potato
Corky Ringspot is a serious infectious disease of potato. When present, tuber losses can be as high as 50%. The primary symptoms are characteristic concentric rings on tuber skin and internal tissues. The disease is caused by the Tobacco Rattle Virus and vectored by Stubby-Root Nematodes. The virus has a wide host range and stubby-root nematodes are often found at soil depths greater than 12 inches. This presentation is designed to assist potato growers, professional consultants and other practitioners, throughout all potato growing regions, in understanding and managing Corky Ring Spot. It contains information about symptoms of the disease, Tobacco Rattle Virus, Stubby-Root Nematodes and how to sample for this nematode, in addition to the management strategies of containment, exclusion and nematode population control. Special reference is given to chemical and biological control options and the topic of soil health. After hearing this presentation, members of the potato growing community should have a general overall understanding of the nature of Corky Ring Spot and options for managing this key disease.
NPPGA Field Day August 24
Come join us for the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association field day on August 24, 2017. The detail for the field day can be found in the attached flyer. Hope to see you there.
Blightline August 17, 2017
Additional late blight was reported yesterday from the rural municipality of Stanley in southern Manitoba. With the recent lingering cool and wet weather, all producers should be on the lookout for late blight and be applying fungicides. Remember the NPPGA field day next week on Thursday August 24 at Larimore, Inkster and Hoople.
Blightline August 16, 2017
Additional late blight has been confirmed near Inkster, ND and Perham, MN since the last report on Thursday August 14. We have had many questions from producers and consultants, and producers are actively applying fungicides for late blight protection. We recommend that all growers continue to scout potato fields for late blight. Growers in areas where late blight is present should apply a specialty fungicide with strong activity against late blight, such as Orondis, Revus Top or Ranman, Omega or Gavel on a five to seven day schedule. Curzate is recommended after a rain because it will kill late blight infections that are less than two days old.

Aphid Alert Aug 11
Three locations topped 3 figures in vector counts this week (Ada at 217, Brooks at 173, and Humboldt at 205). The Humboldt site had a particularly high catch this week so if you're in the northern Valley, the aphids they are a movin'. Cereal aphids are starting to move out of grains and are being recorded in traps at high number, especially corn leaf aphids which are the most common vector species recovered from traps this year. Also numerous this week were soybean aphids, with a major trap catches in the northern RRV.
Blightline August 10, 2017
Late blight has been confirmed in a commercial potato field in Benton County, MN north of Rice. Late blight has also been confirmed in potatoes in the Rural Municipality of Norfolk-Treherne in South Central Manitoba. We recommend to thoroughly scout all potato fields in these areas for late blight.
