Advanced Searching and Linking

The main website provides much of the functionality listed below, yet it's sometimes helpful to have fine-grained control over the query parameters.

This is especially so when one wants to publish a URL to a specific query, either on a website or in an email.

Url Structure

/view /last_x_years /bushels_acre /?zipcode=x &SCOPE=x &not_location=1st+City+Name&not_location=... &variety=1st+Variety+Name&variety=... &year=x

/view: The base URI of all view requests.

/last_x_years or /year: The range of years to consider. There are two types of query:

  • /last_x_years
    • x: an integer greater than 0
    • Uses a range of years.
    • examples: /last_3_years /last_5_years /last_10_years
  • /year
    • year: a four-digit year
    • Sets the range to 3, showing data only for the given year and the two previous.
    • examples: /2011 /2010

/field: The type or measure of the data to view.

  • examples: /bushels_acre /protein_percent /test_weight

/?zipcode=x: The zipcode to "center" the query on.

  • x: the zipcode
  • example: /?zipcode=58102

&SCOPE=x: The scope of the search from the given zipcode.

  • x: a single word describing the scope of the search. There are four values:
    • NEAR
      • Only uses a handful of nearby locations in the query.
    • ND
      • Uses data from all of ND, sorted by distance to the entered zipcode.
    • MN
      • Uses data from all of MN, sorted by distance to the entered zipcode.
    • ALL
      • Uses all data in the database, sorted by distance to the entered zipcode.
  • example: &SCOPE=NEAR

&not_location=1st+City+Name&not_location=...: Selects locations that should not be included in the query.

  • 1st+City+Name: The name of the location to exclude.
  • Names are case-sensitive ("minot" is not the same as "Minot").
  • Replace all spaces, apostrophes, etc. with the "+" character.
  • Multiple instances of this option can be used.
  • example: &not_location=Langdon
  • example: &not_location=Langdon&not_location=Minot
  • example: &not_location=Langdon&not_location=Fergus+Falls

&variety=1st+Variety+Name&variety=...: When doing a head-to-head variety comparison, the varieties to compare are specified here.

  • 1st+Variety+Name: The name of the variety for comparison.
  • Names are case-sensitive ("faller" is not the same as "Faller").
  • Replace all spaces, apostrophes, etc. with the "+" character.
  • Multiple instances of this option can and must be used.
  • example: &variety=Faller&variety=Albany
  • example: &variety=SY+Soren&variety=Faller&variety=Barlow

&year=x: When viewing a range of years, selects the currently viewed year within that range.

  • x: the year to view
  • example: &year=2010
