North Dakota Garden Variety Trials!

North Dakota State University works with gardeners every year to evaluate promising vegetable and flower varieties. All gardeners are welcome to participate. This includes you!

The trials are simple and fun. Here is how we do it:

  1. Gardeners look through the NDSU seed catalog and choose what they want to grow. If you want to grow carrots, NDSU will send you two promising varieties of carrots to compare.
  2. You grow the two carrot varieties in your garden.
  3. You fill out a simple data sheet, letting NDSU know which variety produced more, tasted better, etc. NDSU wants to know which variety you recommend to other gardeners in North Dakota.
  4. NDSU combines your results with other gardeners, publishes the results, and makes recommendations of carrot varieties to gardeners across North Dakota.

In our survey of participating gardeners last year:

  • 100% would recommend this program to other gardeners.
  • 97% were introduced to new varieties.
  • 85% had higher yields.

You can order online and we will ship your seeds out ASAP. It's a fun project for the entire family. Ordering information is at our website www.ag.ndsu.edu/homegardenvarietytrials/
