It was moved by Olson and seconded by Tucker to include in the discussion a project that was submitted to the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board titled “Quantify water use in irrigated sugarbeet production on sandy soils”.  The motion carried.

The committee members discussed the following projects:

Developing recommendations for managing Rhizoctonia Root Rot of sugarbeet
Researcher: Mohamed Khan
Amount requested: $12,500

The objective of this project is to determine the compatibility and crop safety of mixing fungicides used for Rhizoctonia root rot control with starter fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides.

Evaluation of sugarbeet varieties for susceptibility to Fusarium Yellows
Researcher: Jerald Bergman
Amount requested:  $3,500

The objective of this project is to identify sugarbeet varieties having resistance to fusarium yellows and demonstration to growers in the Montana Dakota American Crystal sugarbeet factory district.

Quantify water use in irrigated sugarbeet production on sandy soils
Researchers: Tyler Tjelde, James Staricka and Jerald Bergman
Amount requested: $3,500

The objectives of this research are:

1. Investigate different irrigation rates in sugarbeet production to improve water use efficiency.
2. Determine critical stages of water use in sugarbeet production.
3. Refine irrigation scheduling recommendations.

Discussion of projects/funding decisions

The committee members individually scored the three projects.  The scores were used to determine the funding priorities.  The projects ranked as follows:

1. Developing recommendations for managing Rhizoctonia root rot of sugarbeet.
2. Quantify water use in irrigated sugarbeet production on sandy soils.
3. Evaluation of sugarbeet varieties for susceptibility to Fusarium Yellows.

It was moved by Tucker and seconded by Hultin to grant negotiated funding as follows:

1. $7,829 to the project titled “Developing recommendations for managing Rhizoctonia root rot.”
2. $2,275 to the project titled “Quantify water use in irrigate sugarbeet production on sandy soils.”

Funding was divided between the two top-ranked applications by an equal percentage (approximately 63.5%) of the amount requested.  Funding is contingent on the researcher’s ability to secure adequate funding to conduct the study as presented.

The motion carried.
