Stacking the Cards in Your Favor  1/5/18“How are you?”  It’s a question we often use to open a conversation.  Sometimes it’s one we just ask in passing, not really expecting an answer.  With Don, it was very predictable.

Don was a custodian at one of the schools where I taught.  Greeting him every morning as I arrived at school, I’d ask, “How are you?”  With a big smile on his face, he would ALWAYS answer enthusiastically, “Good and getting better!”

Good health is something many of us take it for granted.  But only until it’s gone.

When we have good health, it’s worth guarding.  When we aren’t enjoying good health, we want to get it back.

If you’ve set some health-related goals for yourself, stack the cards in your favor to achieve those goals by taking advantage of these resources:

Supertracker (https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/default.aspx) helps you plan, analyze and track your diet and physical activity. You can use it to tie into your personal goals and tap into virtual coaching and journaling.

Be Active YOUR Way (https://health.gov/paguidelines/pdf/adultguide.pdf) provides practical tips to help you achieve success with your physical activity or exercise goals.  Whether you are just getting started, or wanting to step up your routine, this resource, along with https://go4life.nia.nih.gov/workout-to-go, includes strength, balance and flexibility exercises that can be done anytime, anywhere.  Both resources are user friendly and originally designed to appeal to persons age 50 and over. 

Adding endurance exercises to the mix of strength, balance and flexibility, https://go4life.nia.nih.gov/ encourages you to get excited about exercise and encourage others to do the same.  It includes an interactive activity tracker that allows you to see your progress.  Seeing that progress is a motivation booster!

The Johnson and Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout app is available for iOS and Android mobile devices.  It has over 1,000 7 minute workout routines that require nothing more than a wall, chair or floor space.
