Re-set and Fresh Start for Parents

Re-set and Fresh Start for Parents

If you are a parent and have noticed that you’ve gotten off on the wrong foot or into a rut with some habits you want to change, do it!  Whether it’s a new moment, a new day, a new week, a new month, or a new year, ANY TIME is the right time to make the change you know you need or want to make!

If you have resolved to build a great relationship with your child or children, there are lots of simple things you can do move toward that goal.  Here’s a short list of ideas for you to consider:

  • Give your child or children at least 10 minutes of your undivided attention every day.  Silence your phone and forget about your to-do list so you can be present and focused with your child.  During the time, have a snack and conversation together or engage in a game or activity that both of you enjoy.
  • Start having weekly Family Meetings.  Allow about 30 minutes where family members can encourage each other, resolve differences or disagreements, review schedules, etc.  Some families have the Family Meeting roll right into Family Game Night.  NDSU Extension tips for Family Meetings can be found online at https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/cff/posts/family-meetings.
  • Cut out the criticism.  Instead of criticizing, ask your child sincerely, “How could that have gone differently?  What would have made that better?”
  • Adopt a bedtime routine that includes time for your child to recall and tell you about the best moments of their day, and for you to tell them about yours.
  • Check into parenting classes.  Many are being conducted online from different locations all around the state.  Sign up for one that fits your needs.

For more information about upcoming parenting classes call Cindy at 701-724-3355, or check the ND Parent Education Network online at https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pen.
