Parent-child Relationships are Key to Child/Student Success

Parent-child Relationships are Key to Child/Student Success

A new school year is scheduled to begin in a few weeks.  Making it successful is largely dependent on the relationships kids have with their parents.

It is through relationships that kids develop character strengths such as being motivated to learn, being responsible, and caring for others that play a huge role in their success in school and in life.

Search Institute has found that relationships are essential in building character strengths, even more than things like family income, age of children, background, or family composition.

So what does it take to have the kind of relationships that will ultimately make a real difference for our kids, not only in school, but in all areas of their lives?

After extensive national research, Search Institute has identified five key qualities in those kinds of relationships:

  • Express care: Show your children that you enjoy being with them, and that you care about things that are important to them.
  • Challenge growth: Help your children to see possibilities for their own futures, and encourage them to work hard to be their best.
  • Provide support: Guide and encourage your children as they work to complete tasks and achieve their goals.
  • Share power: Take your children’s ideas seriously, and work together to solve problems and reach goals.
  • Expand possibilities: Help your children connect with people, ideas, and opportunities that help them learn and grow.

According to Search Institute, “When kids experience these five qualities in their relationships, they are more likely to grow up well. They do better in school. They are more caring. And they develop attitudes and skills that will help them throughout their lives. They also become more resilient, which helps them overcome challenges they face in life. In fact, the research suggests that strengthening these five areas of our relationships is one of the most important things we can do as parents for our kids.”

Search Institute is a Minneapolis-based organization that conducts research and works with schools nationally and internationally, and focuses on discovering what kids need to succeed in their families, schools, and communities.
