Missing Caps and Gowns

Missing Caps and GownsGraduation banners on street lamps.  Outdoor lawn signs with photos of each member of a graduating class.  These are a couple of the ways communities are honoring the class of 2020 in lieu of traditional graduation ceremonies.

Teens are dealing with isolation and loss of activities and celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kudos to the people behind the street lamp banners and outdoor lawn signs!  These creative, generous and thoughtful gestures, and others like them, mean a lot.  Such actions can help ease the disappointment teens and their families may be feeling because of not being able to observe the high school graduation milestone in traditional ways.

The willingness and ability to demonstrate flexibility and openness to change might well be considered an indicator of a strong and healthy community, just as it has been identified as one of the seven characteristics of a strong and healthy family.  The six other characteristics of a strong and healthy family are:

  • Expressing appreciation, support, respect for each other and the sacrifices they make
  • Democratic decision making
  • Communication
  • Shared values
  • Quality time together
  • Connection with others in the family and community

Since there are seven characteristics, it would be easy to have your family focus on a different characteristic each day or evening of the week.  Begin by discussing, defining, or explaining what us meant by each characteristic.  Then share examples of how you currently practice each one, and/or ideas for how you could or would like to practice each one.
