Half-empty Cereal Boxes


cereal boxWithout my teenage son at home, the breakfast cereal in my cupboard doesn’t disappear as fast as it used to.  For one reason or another, many people are faced with the challenge of half-empty cereal boxes from time to time.  Sometimes it’s because the cereal isn’t a favorite with your family members.  Sometimes it’s because we over-bought when the cereal was on sale and too-good-of-a-deal to pass up.  There are several creative ways to use that cereal before it goes stale.  Doing so will save money and reduce waste. 

Unsweetened cereals can be crushed and substituted for bread crumbs.  Place the cereal in a plastic bag and squeeze the bag in your hands or place it on the counter and roll a glass or rolling pin over it.   If you’ve got young children around, they’ll have fun helping you with this step!  The crushed cereal can be used to make meatloaf or to dredge chicken breasts or French toast sticks.  If the crumbs are fairly coarse in texture, try sprinkling them on top of hashbrowns or other oven-baked casseroles. 

An option for cereals that are chocolate, cinnamon, peanut butter or fruit flavored is to crush them and stir them into batters for making pancakes, waffles, or muffins.

Instead of using granola, try adding crushed cereals to yogurt, pudding and ice cream.  This gives those foods a flavor sensation and an interesting little crunch.  A yogurt parfait made by layering yogurt, cereal, and cut-up fresh fruit can be a delicious snack that kids like to help prepare.  Crisp rice cereals, all-bran cereals, and corn-based cereals are usually the ones that work best for this purpose.
