DIY - Ice Cream!

DIY - Ice Cream! 06/24/16The trend of “Do-It-Yourself” (DIY) is enjoying great popularity in everything from home make-overs to crafting and cooking.  With this in mind, today seems like an opportune time to take a look at DIY ice cream, especially since we are in the last days of June, “Dairy Month,” and heading into July, “National Ice Cream Month.”

Making DIY (homemade) ice cream is fun and easy.  It can also be a social activity. Using an electric ice cream maker or an old-fashioned crank-type ice cream maker are two ways to get the job done.  However, there’s another way.  Let’s call it, “Ice Cream in a Bag.”  It is an activity that be enjoyed by people of all ages at picnics.  It makes a great inter-generational activity at family reunions, and can be a nice alternative to s’mores when you have a campfire.  When I worked as the Director of Activities at a nursing home, the residents enjoyed making DIY Ice Cream in a Bag, too, though some wore clean cloth gloves to keep their hands from getting too cold!

For a single serving, start with a clean, empty pint-size reseal-able plastic freezer bag.  Pour these ingredients into the bag:  ½ cup of whole milk (or ¼ cup milk plus ¼ cup of half and half), 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract.  Squeeze the air out of the pint-sized bag, seal it shut, and massage it to mix the ingredients together.  Then put the sealed pint-sized bag into a quart-size reseal-able plastic freezer bag that has about 1 cup of crushed ice and ¼ cup rock salt (or canning salt) in it.  Now massage, knead, and squish the small bag around inside the bigger bag.  If your hands get cold, wear clean cloth gloves, or wrap the bag inside a clean hand towel and shake it vigorously.  In about ten minutes, you will have DIY homemade soft-serve ice cream!  To avoid salty ice cream, be sure to wipe off the outside of the small bag before you open it.

To make a larger quantity and add some physical activity to the experience, quadruple the ingredients.  Use 2 cups of milk, (or 1 cup of milk plus 1 cup of half and half), ¼ cup of sugar, and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract.  Put the ingredients inside a clean, empty small coffee can, and secure the lid with duct tape.  Then put the small can inside a larger coffee can with about 4 cups of crushed ice and 1 cup of rock salt or canning salt.  Secure the lid with duct tape, and then kick, roll, or toss the can around the group for about 10 minutes.

Making ice cream together is a great way to make memories together.  Enjoy your family and your time together with them!
