Are You in an Unhealthy Relationship?

Are You in an Unhealthy Relationship?Although the scary costumes are put away for another year, the real-life scary stuff remains.  One of the scary things in life is abusive and unsafe relationships.

More than one in four North Dakota high school students have experienced controlling behavior or emotional abuse in their dating relationships, according to the 2017 Youth Behavior Risk Survey.

Parents play an important role in teaching their young children, pre-teen children, and teenagers about healthy relationships.  Often times, the teaching can be direct, as in providing guidance and support, and engaging in ongoing conversations.  Word to the wise: start meaningful conversations with your children on this topic and other important topics early, and have them often.

Parents need to also be aware that children learn a lot just by watching their parents.  Our children will get a loud and clear message about relationships by watching and learning from the example parents provide in their own relationships.

Honesty and trust, communication, independence, equality, safety, support, and respect are elements of a healthy dating relationship.

If you or your child is in an abusive or unsafe relationship, get help by reaching out in one of these ways:

  • Call the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline at 1-888-293-6118
  • Visit the website, loveisrespect.org, to chat with someone online
  • Text LOVEIS to 22522 (Message and data rates apply for text help services)
