A Bumpy Ride on the Road of Life

A Bumpy Ride on the Road of Life  12/20/19Imagine yourself bicycling down a road that has lots of potholes.  Your ride will either be swervy as you try to avoid the potholes, or it will be bumpy as you hit them head-on. 

But what if you are bicycling on a smooth road, free of potholes, and still having a swervy or bumpy ride? You wonder what could be the reason.  So you inspect your wheels and tires. 

You know that the wheel has spokes extending out from the hub, and that the spokes create wedge-shaped pieces that extend all the way from the hub of the wheel to the outer edge or rim of the wheel.  You know that the spokes and wedges have to be equal length in order to make a smooth outer edge around the rim, and that a smooth outer edge or rim is essential if you are to have a smooth ride. 

But as you inspect your wheels, you discover that the spokes and wedges are not all the same length and because of that, the outer edge or rim is not smooth.  In fact, it is squished down and flat in some places.  Aha!  You have discovered the reason for your bumpy ride.

The unbalanced wheel can be a metaphor for an unbalanced life.

In the wheel of life, the wedge shaped pieces have names:

  • Physical wellness
  • Intellectual/mental wellness
  • Social wellness
  • Emotional wellness
  • Spiritual wellness 

If each spoke and wedge-shaped piece is not full (“well”) to the rim, life itself is a bumpy ride, and each spoke and each wedge affects all the other wedges. 

If physical wellness is suffering, it can affect and take a toll on social wellness, and all the others, too.  If emotional or mental wellness is suffering, physical wellness, and all the others, can be hurting before long, also. 

Each dimension of wellness affects all the other dimensions of wellness. 

If we are physically ill or injured, it is important to get help and treat the problem so that physical wellness is restored.

Likewise, if we are emotionally or mentally hurting, it is important to get help so that emotional and mental wellness is restored.
