Benefits of Trees

Benefits of TreesSpring is the best time to plant trees in our area.  Arbor Day is celebrated nationally at the end of April or beginning of May each year.  The Arbor Day Foundation’s goal is to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.  North Dakota recognizes Arbor Day on the first Friday in May annually, which in 2021 is Friday, May 7.  May of our area cities celebrate Arbor Day and are recognized as a Tree City USA.

Not everyone has the resources to plant a tree annually, but we can all be aware of the benefits that trees provide us and help to take care of trees that are currently living in our areas.

Trees provide humans and animals with shade and shelter as well as food.  By providing us shelter they can reduce our home heating and cooling costs.  Trees provide benefits to farmers and landowners by reducing erosion and runoff, filtering the air and providing oxygen for our environment.  When considering which trees to plant be careful in choosing a tree that is developed for our hardiness zone and specific soil types so you can set yourself up for success with your tree planting.

Adding some trees to our landscape can add beauty, improve our living quality and reduce our expenses if placed properly.  Diversification of tree plantings is important for protecting our communities against disease outbreaks such as Emerald Ash Borer, which could take out our city boulevard trees.  A great resource that is available for free for anyone to use when selecting new trees to plant is the ND Tree Selector Tool, which can be found at: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/tree-selector  This website will walk you through the different characteristics that you are looking for in trees you would like planted, then identify some options that fit the characteristics suitable for your needs.
