ARC/PLC Elections for Producers

As part of the Farm Bill producers have the options to make elections in crop-by-crop Agricultural Risk Coverage-County (ARC-Co) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs within each Farm Service Agency (FSA) farm unit, or ARC-Individual for the entire farm.  The deadline for elections of covered commodities is March 15, 2021.

Each enrollment option provides different benefits to farms based on price, yield and covered commodity.  Although election changes for 2021 are optional, enrollment by signed contract is required for each year of the program.  Based on the changes we have been seeing in agriculture commodity prices it may be beneficial to evaluate your options for 2021.

ARC provides income support payments on historical base acres when actual crop revenue declines below a specified guaranteed level. PLC provides income support payments on historical base acres when the national marketing year average price for a covered commodity falls below its effective reference price.  With the lower commodity prices in previous years, PLC was the more logical choice for several crops in 2019 and 2020.

NDSU Extension has developed an online tool to aid producers in making their ARC/PLC decision. I am happy to work with producers by appointment to go over their options for their farms in 2021. Please contact the NDSU Extension Office ahead of time to guarantee I am available to help you.  If you prefer to play with the excel spreadsheet yourself it can be downloaded from: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/farmmanagement/farm-bill.
